Despite the ubiquity of red, double underlined type, cover letters that rehash verbatim what's in the brochure accompanying it, and boneheaded Publishers Clearinghouse tactics (which, I'm sad to say, DO work), it is possible to do direct mail that is a) effective and b) not an embarassment to show as examples.
